Most professional football players, especially those playing in one of the big five European football
leagues, earn salaries that range from “good” to “incredible.” Muhammad, Egyptian winger for EnglishPremier League football club Liverpool, is no exception – but what is an exception could be his approach
to spending the money he earns. That he was different from a stereotypical football player first came to
light when the paparazzi noticed his phone’s screen was cracked and asked him about it.
Born in an underdeveloped village of Egypt, Muhmmad had a dream of being a professional footballer
one day. His family wasn’t that well off, being from a lower class family his family found it hard to meets
ends every month.
Muhammad didn’t have shoes to play football in and he used to go and play bare foot just to follow his
dreams. Tall, muscular, long afro hair, Muhammad looked like a pharaoh. He would travel alone from
one city to another just to get to the city near his village where he could go and play football and get
better facilities. He had no money to pay for the bus ride but he told the bus conductor to return the
money one day when he becomes a footballer. Such was his determination, his passion for the game
and belief in himself was enough to convince anyone that he would make it one day and fulfil his dream.
He was extremely lucky when a scouting team from France saw him play in Egypt and decided to take
him onboard to their club and get him admitted in their youth system. This was the start to the rise of
Muhammed as a player, being in France with some of the best football facilities in the world, he was
able to learn quickly and improve as a player. He was then offered a professional football contract and
soon he featured for their senior team. The greats of the game were quick enough to recognize his
talent and predict him going right to the top.
His biggest breakthrough was when English Premier League football club Southampton offered him a 5
year contract which attracted the attention of all the big clubs in the league. Muhammad spent 3 years
at Southampton before the most successful club in English history, Liverpool, offered him a 5 year
contract. There he won countless trophies, along with the biggest trophy club football has to offer, the
Champions League.
Muhammad’s belief in himself since a very young age shows that if you are passionate about something,
always work yourself towards that regardless of what anyone says.
